Penguins - Traveling the World: The Long Road Home, Willy Puchner
1999
Joe is one hundred and fifteen centimeters high and weighs five and a half kilograms, around his neck he carries a cheap camera. Sally measures one hundred and ten centimeters and weighs five kilos. Their bodies are made of palyester resin, painted qith black and white nitrocellulose paint and are glued together at the joints with pink super glue. Their ears, beak and chest are painted orange. Sally usually has red nail polish on her toe-nails. After each journey the paint is touched up again.
Joe and Sally's feet were reinforced with wood to give them more stability. There is a large hole in this platform, and on occasion custom's officers reach their hands or flashlights inside. Small pieces of lead bear witness to the fact that my companions were the cause of a customs agreement. In the form for the Carnet A.T.A. for temporary import it states: "Two lead seals bearing the number 172/393 were attached to the penguins!"
They have to be packed into boxes for longer journeys. Just like in custom-made coffins the fragile cargo lies between foam rubber and padding so that it can be transported in planes or ships. Usually Joe and Sally travel by car or are carried around on a backpack frame. When they go on trips they always need two people to carry them piggy-back place to place. During the course of their travels they have changed their carriers; with varying enthusiasm over twenty companions have carried them around. Iam the only one who was always there with them.
